Soil pathogens, mildew, and other defects have increased rapidly over the past two weeks in Salinas Valley iceberg and romaine crops. In particular, the Impatience Necrotic Spot Virus (INSV) is spreading and causing yield losses. Combined with the sudden drop in temperatures this week and increased processor demand, the supply outlook through the month of October is becoming more concerning.

Harvesting crews are able to detect and reduce or avoid most of these defects with extra trimming of outer leaves, but case weights and color profile are being impacted in commodity packs as a result, and value-added items may have reduced shelf-life potential. The increased yield losses are forcing growers to enter younger fields prior to their scheduled harvest date, which will further reduce yield.
