UPDATE: STRAWBERRIES

Santa Maria growing regions received rain on Saturday, November 23, but harvested Sunday, November 24 due to breaks in the storms. Harvest has been cancelled today and possibly tomorrow due to rain.

Santa Maria

  • Markon First Crop (MFC) Strawberries may be replaced with packer label
  • The fall crop has passed its peak; volume is decreasing
  • Colder temperatures have slowed growth; expect smaller and lighter colored berries
  • Size currently ranges from small to medium (48 to 53 berries per two-pound clamshell)
  • Quality is fair; lighter color and pin rot will be present
  • Expect markets to climb as yields fall

Oxnard

  • MFC Strawberries may be replaced with packer label
  • Volume is decreasing as Oxnard’s peak has passed
  • Size currently ranges from medium to large (18 to 21 berries per one-pound clamshell)
  • Quality is fair; color is a deep red and flavor is sweet
  • Expect markets to remain snug

Mexico (into South Texas)

  • Early season volume is low
  • Size currently ranges from medium to large (20 to 24 berries per one-pound clamshell)
  • Quality is good; small size and white shoulders have been reported
  • Expect increasing volume (crossing into San Juan, Texas)
  • Markets will remain high

Florida

  • Suppliers have started shipping berries in a limited manner
  • Quality will slowly improve week after week
