FROM THE FIELDS: DESERT REGION ROMAINE HEARTS

November 6, 2024

Markon First Crop (MFC) and Ready-Set-Serve (RSS) Romaine Hearts may be limited over the next two to three weeks in the Arizona/California desert growing region.

September’s extreme heat caused inconsistent germination and stunted growth in the desert’s first romaine heart plantings for the winter growing season. More recently, strong winds and much cooler weather have stalled plant growth and caused dehydration, decreasing weights.

It is common for early desert region romaine and romaine hearts to be more open, as opposed to having a classic cupped shape with dense heart material. Additionally, color profile will be a mix of dark green to light yellow. Sporadic long core/seeder may also be present in some lots, but overall quality of the product is good.

Expect romaine heart supplies to have these traits for the next two to three weeks. Markon inspectors are working with suppliers to secure the best product for orders.
