FROM THE FIELDS: WEST COAST RAIN

November 4, 2024

California growing regions along the West Coast including Salinas, Santa Maria, and Oxnard, are expecting to receive ¼” – ¾” of rainfall beginning this evening and continuing into Saturday, November 2. Potential challenges that may develop after the rain include the following.

Baby Leaf Lettuce/Cilantro:

  • Bacterial leaf spot
  • Dirt/mud on product
  • Mildew pressure
  • Reduced shelf-life performance
  • Yellowing leaves

Commodity & Value-Added Broccoli:

  • Brown bead/yellow bead
  • Dirt/mud on product
  • Pin rot
  • Mildew pressure

Commodity & Value-Added Lettuce/Salad Items:

  • Bottom rot/decay
  • Dirt/mud on product
  • Mildew pressure
  • Premature pinking
  • Reduced shelf-life performance

Strawberries:

  • Bruising
  • Dirt/mud on product
  • Pin rot/decay
  • Soft texture
  • Water damage

Skies will clear on Sunday, November 3 but overnight lows will dip into the low 30°s in colder areas of the Salinas Valley through the first part of next week, which will slow plant growth and potentially cause lettuce ice to develop. Markon inspectors will be monitoring field conditions and quality and will update as needed.
