FROM THE FIELDS: WIDESPREAD LETTUCE ICE

February 4, 2022

The Arizona/California desert growing region experienced strong, cold winds in excess of 40+ mph on Wednesday and Thursday, February 2-3. Those winds have decreased, causing morning temperatures to dip into the upper low-to mid-30°s. Widespread light-to-heavy lettuce ice has developed and will cause harvesting delays of up to 3 hours or until lettuce and other desert row crops have thawed out adequately. Loading delays can also be expected over the next few days as the forecast calls for freezing temperatures to continue through the weekend.

Markon inspectors are monitoring conditions and will update further as needed.
