Please click here to view a Markon Live from the Fields video regarding romaine heart challenges in the Arizona/California desert growing region.
- Markon First Crop (MFC) & Ready-Set-Serve (RSS) Romaine Hearts packs are expected to remain limited over the next two to three weeks
- September’s extreme heat caused inconsistent germination and stunted growth in the desert’s first romaine heart plantings
- Strong winds and much cooler temperatures have stalled plant growth, caused dehydration, and decreased weights
- It is common for desert romaine and romaine heart frames to grow more openly during the early part of the season, as opposed to the classic cupped shape with dense heart material
- Leaf color will be a mixture of dark green to light yellow
- Markon inspectors are monitoring supplies and working with growers to secure the best product for Markon orders
- Maintaining the cold chain is critical for maximizing quality and shelf-life
