Green bell pepper harvesting is moving from California to Mexico due to cold weather. Red bell pepper production is focused in Coachella, California. Markon First Crop (MFC) and Markon Essentials (ESS) Green and Red Bell Peppers are available.
Green Bells
- California’s Coachella desert season is winding down quickly due to cold weather, older plants, and reduced yields
- Quality is average/good depending on the lot
- Small sizes and choice grades are most dominant
- Expect a quick transition to Mexico and snug supplies over the next 10 days
- Mexican yields are increasing; however, low evening temperatures have pushed back scheduled start dates for some growers
- Growers in Central Mexico have begun shipping limited stocks into South Texas
- Georgia will experience overnight freezing temperatures this weekend, ending the season; current quality is fair
- Ample stocks are shipping out of North and South Florida; the Central Florida season has started in a light manner
- High markets are expected to decrease slightly over the next two weeks once production is fully established in Mexico
Red Bells
- California’s coastal regions of Hollister and Somis are ending due to rain and cold weather
- Coachella desert volume is steady despite cool weather
- Quality is very good
- This season will run until the end of December, weather permitting
- Supply levels are light/steady out of Jalisco, Mexico (crossing into South Texas)
- The Canadian greenhouse season has ended, increasing demand for California/Mexican-grown fruit
- Expect elevated yet steady prices over the next two weeks
