California’s available Valencia orange supply continues to diminish. Markon expects California to experience an orange supply gap in October that will persist until the Navel season begins in late October/early November. Size, grade, Country of Origin substitutions, and loading date changes will be necessary to fill orders.
Oranges
California Valencia
- Markon First Crop (MFC) and Markon Essentials (ESS) Valencia Oranges are available
- Quality is fair, at best
- New crop California Navels will begin shipping in late October
- Expect elevated markets for the remainder of the Valencia season
Import Navels
- Oranges are being imported into both the East and West Coasts
- Imported stocks continue to tighten as they are filling the supply void in California
- Quality is good: early decay and scarring are being reported
- Expect steady, yet elevated markets as supplies continue to diminish
Mexico
- The season is just beginning with limited crossings into Texas
- The Early orange variety will be available in Edinburg, Texas
- Quality is good; yellowish color has been reported
- Expect elevated pricing until supplies increase
Lemons
Domestic
- MFC and ESS Lemons are available
- New crop California production has begun in a limited matter; quality is good
- Expect slowly declining pricing over the next six weeks
Offshore
- Offshore fruit from Argentina and Chile will be shipped into North America through early December
- These shipments will help fill the demand not met by California lemons
- Quality is good; brown spotting, early decay, and scarring are being reported
Mexican
- Mexican shipments have started and will run through late November
- Size will be predominately 165- through 235-count fruit; larger sizes will be available
- Expect pricing to be lower than domestic fruit
